The Digital Divide: A Myth and a Real Problem

Our children are not less capable. The infrastructure and the curriculum are less present.

Reject the version that insults us

The digital divide is often discussed as though Black American children were less able to absorb technology. That version is false and should be rejected without apology. Make anything genuinely popular among Black American youth and the competition for excellence in it becomes extreme. Capability was never the constraint.

The real divide is access and instruction: broadband that reaches the house, a device that is not shared between four siblings, and a school that teaches building rather than only browsing.

Consumption versus creation

Almost every Black American child has a supercomputer in their pocket and almost none has been taught to make anything with it. The device is configured for consumption and monetised accordingly. That is the divide that matters now - not who has a screen, but who can write for one.

A phone is a distribution channel for someone else's product until the moment its owner learns to build. Then it is a workshop.

The infrastructure half

Broadband build-out is a construction contract, and Black American firms should be winning it. Laying the fibre our children will learn on is both a service to the community and a business - the two are not in tension, and this platform is generally suspicious of arguments that they are.
