Emotional intensity is a strength in culture and a liability in politics.
Within the Black American Zeitgeist, intensity of emotion carries equal or higher status than reason. Passion is treated as evidence of seriousness; dispassionate analysis reads as coldness or as distance from the community.
In music, preaching, comedy and family life this is a genuine strength. In political negotiation it is exactly the wrong instrument, and our counterparties have known it for a long time.
An outraged constituency is a predictable constituency. It can be mobilised by whoever produces the outrage, and it will accept symbolic resolution because symbols satisfy feeling. That is why so much of what is offered to Black America is symbolic.
A community that reacts is managed. A community that calculates is negotiated with.
This is not an argument for suppressing emotion, which would be both impossible and a loss. It is an argument for sequence: analyse first, then feel about the conclusion. Decide the position when calm and hold it when provoked.
