Athletics is one of the few paths to wealth that Black American children are actively encouraged toward, and the encouragement is wildly out of proportion to the odds. The number who will earn a living from sport is vanishingly small; the number who organise their adolescence around the attempt is enormous.
That imbalance is not the children's error. It is what happens when a community is shown one door repeatedly and the others rarely.
