Generational Wealth: Building Something That Survives You

Income is what you earn. Wealth is what is still there when you are not.

The difference that explains the gap

Income and wealth are routinely confused, and the confusion hides the real problem. Two families can earn the same salary for thirty years and end with entirely different balance sheets, because one inherited a house and the other paid rent. The wealth gap is not primarily a wage gap. It is an inheritance gap, compounded.

This matters for strategy. A policy that raises income without creating an asset changes the monthly figure and leaves the generational one exactly where it was.

The three assets that actually transfer

A home, a business, and a portfolio. Those are the three things that reliably pass from one generation to the next, and Black American families are underweight in all three. Everything else - the car, the wardrobe, the jewellery that rap culture has spent forty years teaching our children to want - transfers nothing and depreciates on the way.

The chapter on culture is not separate from this one. A generation taught to display consumption rather than accumulate assets has been taught to stay poor in an expensive way.

Acquire, achieve, establish

The values run in that order and most of us stop at the first. Acquisition is getting paid. Achievement is building something that works. Establishment is building something that outlives you - a firm with a successor, a property with a deed, a fund with a beneficiary.

A community that celebrates only acquisition produces spectacular individual careers and no institutions. We have had a century of that. It is time to want the third thing.

What the party pushes for

Financial literacy taught in public school as a core subject, not a seminar. Pathways to homeownership, and protection of the land and heirs' property Black American families already hold from predatory acquisition. Community-owned investment vehicles. Business succession planning treated as a normal part of running a firm rather than an afterthought.

And sound money, because none of the above survives a currency that is quietly debased. Article V is not an abstraction; inflation is the tax that falls hardest on the saver who did everything right.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between income and generational wealth?

Income is what you earn; wealth is the assets that remain and transfer. The racial wealth gap is primarily an inheritance gap rather than a wage gap.

Which assets does the party say actually transfer?

A home, a business and a portfolio. Consumer goods transfer nothing and depreciate.

What is 'acquire, achieve, establish'?

The three stages of building: getting paid, building something that works, and building something that outlives you. The party argues Black American culture celebrates the first and neglects the third.
