Land and Real Estate: The Asset That Cannot Be Printed

Property is the foundation of generational wealth, and Black American families have been losing it for a century.

Ownership is the whole argument

A renter's payment buys thirty days. An owner's payment buys equity, and equity is the collateral behind almost every business loan, every education fund and every inheritance in this country. The homeownership gap is therefore not one problem among several - it is upstream of most of the others.

Article XI of the platform treats homeownership as foundational for that reason, not as a lifestyle preference.

Heirs' property is a slow-motion dispossession

A great deal of Black American land is held as heirs' property - passed down without a will, owned in common by dozens of descendants, and legally fragile in a way most owners do not discover until a developer explains it to them. A single heir can force a sale of the whole. Land that survived Jim Crow is being lost to probate.

This is fixable and largely unaddressed. Clear title, written wills, and legal help at the moment of inheritance would preserve more Black American wealth than most of what is currently debated.

Farming and food independence

Black American farmers were once a substantial share of American agriculture and are now a rounding error. That decline was not natural; it was the product of credit discrimination and administrative attrition over decades. Reversing even part of it would put land, equipment and operating businesses back into community hands - and food independence is a strategic asset for any people that intends to be self-determining.

What the party pushes for

Pathways to first-time homeownership. Legal support for clearing title on heirs' property before it is contested. Protection from predatory acquisition in neighbourhoods where values are rising. Support for Black American farming and land stewardship. And community development banking, because all of the above needs a lender that does not treat the applicant as a category.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the Black American Party prioritise homeownership?

Because equity is the collateral behind business lending, education funding and inheritance. The homeownership gap sits upstream of most other wealth problems.

What is heirs' property and why does it matter?

Land passed down without a will and owned in common by many descendants. It is legally fragile - a single heir can force a sale - and Black American families are losing to probate land that survived Jim Crow.
