That is the founder's formulation and it is exact. The distinguishing feature of a communist system is not that it redistributes income; it is that private ownership of productive property is abolished. Whatever else follows, the factory, the land, the storefront and the press belong to the state.
Every objective in this platform is an ownership objective. Black-owned firms, Black-owned land, Black-owned media, Black-owned banks, a transferable estate. The entire theory of the case is that this community has been kept from owning productive property and that acquiring it is how the position changes.
A system that abolishes the private ownership of productive property does not deliver that objective. It ends it, permanently, one generation before we get there. You cannot inherit what nobody is permitted to hold, and generational wealth - the thing this platform exists to build - is by definition a transfer of owned assets.
There is a bitter arithmetic in the timing, too. Black Americans have been excluded from ownership for the whole period during which others accumulated. An offer to abolish ownership arriving now would freeze that distribution in place and call it equality.
This party does not need to relitigate that history to make its argument, and it declines to pretend the history is not there. The states that actually implemented the system produced famine, mass imprisonment and the suppression of exactly the independent institutions - the press, the church, the association, the union that is not the state's union - through which a minority population defends itself.
That last point is the one that should concern us most directly. A community that is not the majority survives by holding institutions the government does not control. Every system that concentrates all institutional power in the state removes the only defense a minority has ever had.
Black Americans are approached with this argument more often than almost any other American constituency, and the approach is not accidental. A population with a genuine grievance against how capital has been distributed is a natural audience for anyone proposing to abolish capital, and organizers who have never lived in our neighborhoods have been arriving with that pitch for a century.
Our grievance is real. The conclusion is not ours. We were not excluded from ownership in order to conclude that ownership is illegitimate; we were excluded in order to be poor, and the answer to being kept out of a thing is to get into it.
As the platform's chapters on agents and detractors argue: a movement that cannot tell the difference between an ally and a recruiter will be harvested by the second while looking for the first.
It does not mean this party defends every outcome an American market has produced. This platform is unusually blunt about predatory lending, about the extraction economies operating in our districts, about capital denied on racial grounds and about firms that profit from defaming us.
The objection to those things is not that markets exist. It is that we have been on the wrong side of them by design. The remedy is to own, to capitalize, to compete and to be paid - not to abolish the field the moment we are finally allowed onto it.
