Strange Bedfellows: Who We Can Work With

An independent party has to be able to cooperate without being absorbed.

Coalition is not conversion

A party genuinely independent of both coalitions will find allies in unexpected places - and will be accused of betrayal for it by whichever side feels entitled to its loyalty.

The test for any alliance is simple: does this advance Foundational Black American interests, on terms we set, without requiring us to adopt positions that do not serve us? If yes, work together. If no, decline politely and remember the offer.

Where the overlaps genuinely are

On sound money, small business relief, occupational licensing reform, school choice and family policy, useful partners often sit on the right. On predatory lending, criminal justice reform, voting access and healthcare, they often sit on the left.

Neither set of partners has to agree with the rest of our platform. Coalitions are assembled per issue; that is how effective interest groups have always operated.

The rule that keeps it safe

Never enter a coalition whose success requires our permanent subordination, and never let an ally define our agenda for us. Alliances are transactions between parties with their own interests - which is only possible if we have clearly stated ours first.

This is why the written platform comes before the coalition-building, and not the other way round.

Expect to be attacked from both sides

A party that works with the right on licensing reform and with the left on predatory lending will be called a sellout by one and a reactionary by the other, frequently in the same week. That reaction is not evidence of error; it is the predictable cost of belonging to neither camp.

The people most offended by independence are usually those who were counting on the vote. Their discomfort is the point, and a party that flinches at it has already rejoined the arrangement it left.

Judge the deal, not the company

Coalitions are judged by what they deliver, not by who else is in the room. The relevant questions are narrow: what does the community get, when does it get it, what is conceded, and can we walk away? If those four answers are good, a partner's other views are their own business.

This is ordinary political practice everywhere except, apparently, when Black Americans attempt it.

Frequently asked questions

Will the Black American Party work with other political groups?

Yes, issue by issue, where it advances Foundational Black American interests on terms the party sets - without adopting the partner's wider programme.

What is the limit on coalitions?

The party will not enter a coalition whose success requires its permanent subordination, or let an ally define its agenda.
