Every people that intends to lead maintains institutions that produce leaders.
Not a class of the rich. A functioning elite is the layer of a society that carries its standards, trains its successors and takes responsibility for its direction - the professional associations, the endowed institutions, the mentorship chains and the honour societies that every durable people maintains.
Black America has produced extraordinary individuals and comparatively few institutions to compound them. Excellence without infrastructure has to be reinvented every generation.
Integration was necessary and it was also costly in a way that is rarely counted. Black-owned banks, insurers, hospitals, schools, newspapers and professional associations lost their captive market and their best talent in the same decade. What replaced them was access to other people's institutions - on other people's terms.
Naming that cost is not an argument against integration. It is an argument for rebuilding what was lost alongside it.
Endowed scholarships that we control. Professional associations for Black American engineers, physicians, financiers and tradespeople that function as genuine networks rather than annual dinners. Mentorship as a standing obligation of anyone who has succeeded. And a culture in which achievement carries a duty back to the community rather than an exit from it.
