Family, Fatherhood and Legacy

Acquire, achieve, establish — and why a culture stuck on the first word cannot build the third.

The American Black Family is the most important asset we have to secure the survival and success of our people. Within the family we pass our values on to our children. The values with which we raise our children define our culture and who we are. Both little boys and little girls need the example of an adult of their same gender in the home.

As a man develops through the various stages of maturity in life, hopefully he develops a sense of logos. What I mean by logos in this instance is the desire to create the world in the most ideal order for the next and future generations. Some call it creating Gods paradise on Earth. This innate desire in the spirit of each individual man, culminates in the collective and results in the building of homes, neighborhoods, cities, counties, states, and countries. As a man matures, his view of his environment should expand. This is especially true as his circle of influence expands.

As a man develops through the various stages of maturity in life, hopefully he develops a sense of logos.

Logos: building for the next generation

It is an unfortunate reality that within the Black American Zeitgeist there is a “ceiling”, above which no Black man should concern himself. Outside of the parameters of his perceived limitations lies such issues as American foreign policy. Within both the American and the Black American Zeitgeists, the Black American man is property and product of the United States, and the greatest issues with which he should concern himself are how he is treated within the United States by White people.

The ceiling inside the Black American Zeitgeist

This paradigm automatically puts a damper on any Black American man’s desire to build and establish for future generations. The idea that his highest aspirations will always be limited or regulated by the world in which he operates. This world, in his mind, will always be, the White man’s world. This understanding brings a sense of futility to any institution he might wish to establish. This is one of the more toxic components of the Black American Zeitgeist.

As the internet brings the world closer together, it is becoming increasingly difficult for those who benefit from the Black American sense of isolation and victimization to continue to convince Black Americans to only see themselves from within the bubble of American society. Black American men, especially, are recognizing themselves as world citizens. This is largely due to Black American men traveling internationally at increasing rates, often in search of a romantic connection.

One of the more profound negative effects of the statistical removal of the Black American father from the home, is the loss of the influence of father to son, in the name of logos. Our sons have by and large lost the values of building and establishing homes and communities, let alone think strategically in the national, or global geopolitical arena on behalf of Black Americans.

What is lost when the father is removed

Through the co-opting of our popular music and culture, our children have been inculcated with the banal values of acquisition over achievement, accomplishment, or establishment. The pervasive theme of rap culture is to “get paid”, instead of to build, establish, or provide for future generations in any way. These are the values that are shoved down our children’s throats from outside of Black American society. Modern day minstrelsy paying homage to its father art form, by promoting the same childish, uncivilized value system of wanton materialism, and vulgar displays of money, jewelry, and luxury items.
